Understanding the FEBU Part 1 Syllabus: What You Need to Know

The FEBU (Fellow of the European Board of Urology) is the European benchmark for urological competence. Passing it earns you a "Mark of Quality" recognised across Europe — and increasingly beyond. Here's what the Part 1 written exam covers.

The Structure

The FEBU Part 1 is a single online paper:

There's no negative marking. The pass mark uses cohort-based standard setting — derived from the average score and standard deviation of all candidates. Pass rates are typically around 85%.

You're eligible if you're a final-year resident in an EBU member country or already hold a national urology diploma.

The Curriculum: ETR 2025

The FEBU syllabus is defined by the European Training Requirements (ETR), most recently updated in 2025. It uses a graded knowledge system:

Grade 3 topics are examination priorities and you should focus your revision accordingly.

Basic Sciences

The FEBU expects solid basic science foundations:

Anatomy

Physiology

Pathology & Pharmacology

Clinical Domains

Uro-Oncology (Heavily Weighted)

Detailed expectations across all urological malignancies including mpMRI/PI-RADS, fusion biopsy, ISUP grading, prognostic nomograms (Partin, Kattan, Briganti), EORTC risk stratification, nephrometry scores (RENAL, PADUA), and systemic therapy including targeted agents and immunotherapy.

Stone Disease

Functional Urology

BPH/LUTS

Other Domains

The syllabus also covers andrology, paediatric urology (with graded clinical importance), infections, trauma, transplantation, and notably — the ETR 2025 explicitly includes gender-affirming urological procedures at Grade 2.

Guidelines & Recommended Resources

The FEBU is built around EAU Guidelines — they are your primary resource. Almost everything you need for the written exam is in there, updated annually.

Urobank and the Syllabus

Urobank is built around the same topics covered in the FEBU syllabus. Our questions are organised into: Anatomy, Basic Science, Stats, BPH, Functional, Urolithiasis, Infections, Emergency Urology, Trauma, Prostate Cancer, Bladder Cancer, Renal Cancer, UTUC, Testicular Cancer, Penile Cancer, Urethral Cancer, Andrology, Paediatric Urology, Transplant, and Technology.

With content aligned to EAU Guidelines, it's a practical way to test yourself across the breadth of the curriculum.

Final Advice

The FEBU Part 1 syllabus is comprehensive but well-defined. The ETR 2025 grading system tells you exactly where to focus — prioritise Grade 3 topics. EAU Guidelines are your bible.

The exam is passable with structured preparation. Read widely, practise questions, and know your guidelines inside out.
